When I was 7 years old, I visited Niagara Falls! We didn't have our passports to go to Canada, so we stayed on the American side.

There are two falls. There is the American falls and the Horseshoe Falls. The Horseshoe Falls are on the Canadian side. I got to go on the Maid of the Mist to see the falls. This is the boat that goes to both falls and you get really wet! It was really cool.

This time we got to spend three days in Canada. I've never been to Canada! Have you? It was really cool and very cold.

Canada is a neat place. We had to show our passports when my mom drove across the Rainbow Bridge. They asked a lot of questions about our trip, but they let us in. It is not much different from America. In Canada, people speak English and French but everyone we talked to spoke English. They were very nice.

Niagara Falls is very popular. There were a lot of people from all around the world there. It was neat to hear many different languages. They call the restrooms washrooms, too!

We got to do some really neat things:

  • stay in a hotel and see the falls from our window

  • explore the tunnels behind the Canadian falls (Journey Behind the Falls)

  • see the Horseshoe falls up close

  • see the colored falls at night

  • watch the fireworks over the American falls

  • ride the incline railroad from our hotel down to the falls

  • ride the bus to see the butterfly conservatory

  • see the Niagara Whirlpool downstream

It snowed on our last day there. Do you know when it is really cold, for a really long time, the falls can freeze? That would be an amazing thing to see! The falls didn't freeze while we were there, but it was cold!

Niagara Falls was created by glaciers during the Ice Age. We got to ride a simulator to watch how the falls were created. We also pretended to go over the falls and get wet!

Niagara Falls also got its name from the Native American tribe who was there. The Onguiaahra. Their name meant Thunder of Water. It was really hard for the British people to say. They could only say Niagara and that's how the Falls got their name!

The Horseshoe Falls has moved too. In 1678 it was almost a straight line. With all the water rushing over the rock it eroded away and created a U shape. That's a lot of erosion!
