The Hoover Dam is on the border of Arizona and Nevada. It is in the Black Canyon. We drove there from Las Vegas. It is a really big dam! A dam holds water back from a river and makes a big lake.

The dam is very tall. We were supposed to go on a tour of under the dam, but the elevator broke. We went down some really steep stairs to learn more about the dam.

The Hoover Dam is very tall. Lake Meade is above and the Colorado River below.

Steps down to the dam.

The dam was built in 1935. It was a big project. They brought in lots of men on a train everyday to work on it. It took 4 years to build. They used lots and lots of concrete to build it. Something that big was never made out of concrete before. It was amazing!

The train tunnel and the power buildings.

Lake Meade is on one side of the dam. There is a white stripe of rock. Salt in the water sticks to the rocks. The salt colors the rocks white.

The dam lets water out when it gets too full. The water goes through tubes to the river far below.

Tubes lets water go from the lake above to the river below.

The Hoover Dam was really cool to look at and explore. There are many things to learn. I hope you can explore the Hoover Dam sometime!

Have you seen a dam before? Is there one in your town? What does it look like? Tell me below.

Check out some more pictures of Hoover Dam.
